Okay, so this pissed me off a little yesterday. I went to Best Buy to buy an XBOX 360 Wireless Adapter (and yes it's pretty damn lame that Micro$oft didn't include one with either 360 type!) and when I got to the checkout counter the dolt proceeded to tell me that they have a bunch of 360 accessories returned and would I like to buy their protection plan for $20 on the $100 item?
LAME. Can you believe Best Buy is actually telling everyone that buying a 360 is really risky and that you should also buy their damn insurance crap? They gave me the same shit story when I first bought the actual 360! So this was the second time I'd heard this bullshit!
BEST BUY: WHY DON'T YOU STOP SELLING XBOX 360'S IF THEY SUCK AND EVERYONE HAS TO USE YOUR PROTECTION PLAN?

So, maybe it's a different story, but... When I went at Best Buy to get an iPod for my father they offered me the same plan by telling me:
"Hey, you definitely want to buy the protection plan on that!"
My answer: "This iPod is going to Italy, would it make sense to buy the plan?",
"Ehr... Maybe no..."
So I left and then I heard the cashier saying to the next customer: "Hey, you definitely want to buy the protection plan on that!"... Of course, on a different item...
Looks like they are trained to say the same bullshit to everyone who buys electronic stuff...

Best Buy is one of the few (if only) electronics retailers that will swap lightning damaged product out onsite no questions asked. Just keep thinking that your house will never get hit by Bolts of Zeuss too...
Yeah - you can hassle with your deductable and try to get your Rat Bastard Thieving Insurance company to reimburse you after a few months.
Having said that I agree that a plan is overkill on a puny wireless adapater but on the system there are definitely times when the Service Plan comes in handy -- free replacement when crap ass Microsoft parts fry is well worth it in my book.

I hate this store with a passion. Most chains like BB, Circuit City and others do the same thing. They want to scare you inro buying their insurance plan. Just stare them straight in the eye and say "No. I don't want or need the insurance. Thanks." And be done with it.
What's sad is that employees are trained to try and sell you the insurance plan. Extra way for them to get money.

Yes, because Microsoft themselves "make" all the parts there in their Redmond headquarters.
They don't MAKE the parts -- the PS2 had it's own share of part problems, hell all sorts of electronics do. My biggest problem with the protection plan thing is that they go way too far to pawn it off. A simple, "Would you like to purcahse the protection plan?" is all that's needed.
Also -- depending on your wireless router, buying something like this has both worked great for the Xbox, 360, and PS2 -- but I've also used it to bridge computers wirelessly that didn't have wireless cards. Not only was it cheaper than the Wireless Card specifically for the 360, but it's far more versatile and can even be used for ad-hoc connections.

I get a kick out of Best Buy for setting new standards when it comes to uninformed and ignorant employees. A friend of mine was kicked out of the store for the following incident.
He want in to purchase RAM for a customer of his. Said customer wanted a server with a ton of RAM, about 16 gigs worth (yes, that's a lot.) The goon he talked to said that no computer can use that much ram, that he was being rediculous and proceeded to argue with him about it until a manager came about and asked my friend to leave.

I, myself, work at Blockbuster (The movie place) and we're trained to sell people the 'rewards card'. I got some bad news for yah, bro. Almost every retail place does this. If you go to EB (Gamespot now) they say "Want an EBcard/ subscription to [insert game magazine]. If you go to CVS (used to be called Walgreens) they say "Hey, wanna CVS card? It saves you money."
Dude. It's their job. I personally don't like asking people if they want a special offer because of people like you who bitch about it.
Bottom line, they're just trying to save you some money.
Oh, and it's true about the 360. I've gone through 3 since Christmas! the last one I bought at a different store, and it STILL fucked up!

You know, when the sales person spends more time trying to convince me to buy the damn insurance than the time it takes for the entire transaction THAT'S when i get pissed. I just want to buy it and get OUT. I don't want to talk to anyone - I really wish it was just a robot at the checkout counter. Then I could just pay and leave without a sales pitch (which is really covering up a sad desperate plea for more money).

I worked for BB for many years and it was one of the few places I enjoyed working. I was there when the insurance plans first came into existence, and I can give you the inside scoop.
Long story short - the insurance plans saved Best Buy's collective ass. They were almost out of business because they couldn't turn a profit with competition from other big box retailers. They brought in the warranties and suddenly (supposedly) they're making money again.
The plans actually are good. They hedge their bets by requiring that you keep all of the paperwork - receipts, copy of plan, etc. If you misplace anything, you're SOL. But if you can keep the paperwork together, the plan is usually a good deal on something that could break. Unfortunately, they offer the plans on everything down to the bags of Dorritos they have at the checkout lines.

I forgot to mention - it's public knowledge that they make (or used to make) a majority of their profts from those plans and (drum roll, please) accessories. Back in the day, when I worked for them, they made more money off of the sale of an S-video cable then they made off of a $2,000 laptop. In fact, some high-end products COST THEM MONEY to sell. It's a screwed up way of doing business, IMHO, but what do I know? I'm basing all of this on what I heard second-hand (in case any BB lawyers are reading this...)

I think it's stupid that they bash the products to try and upsale on their protection plan. They should have a more honest approach to trying to get you to buy it.
Personally, I am hard on electronics. For things that are portable, I tend to buy plans all the time. Anything could happen, really...it's best to be covered in one of those crazy situations. I dropped my MP3 player down a staircase. My phone fell out of my pocket and into a public toilet. I was crowd surfing, and the mic slipped out of my hand.
Xbox accessories? Sure, maybe I'd buy it for a controller. Those get used and abused, obviously. Anything else should be fine.
I agree with you though. If the product is crap, don't sell it. If the product is good, don't lie to try and promote your coverage.

I feel naive already for my last post. Best Buy is a corporation, and the biggest issue for them is bottom line.
If people want to buy electronics that break all the time, they're going to sell them just to make themselves more money. Maybe that guy was really trying to help you out, by reminding you that they can cover you if anything happens? Maybe his employment depends on asking people these questions all day.
It's not fair, but I'm kind of accepting it as "how things work".

I had one guy at BB who was the model CSR; helped me find things, look up stuff, didn't bug me about plans or even buying it. Also had one girl that wouldn't stop bugging me about additional services (a $30 RAM install service? HA!); I swear she must've been on commission. I did get a service plan for the laptop (given the cost), but I'm not paying 1/5 or 1/2 the total for an extra year of service.
Really, if they're going to suggest a service plan on every piece of electronic, why don't they just say that everything's crap?

When you buy a an MS product you are buying that fact that it WILL fail you in atleast some large capacity. I for one will skip the hassle of the Best Buy insurance by not buying and Xbox 360 (or any MS product) as well as not shoppinga t Best Buy. Best Buy is invading Canada and that really ticks me off, pretty soon the entire Canadian economy will be run by lousy American businesses that put customer service last. {end rant}

I ordered the latest Tomb Raider game on discount from Bestbuy.ca Turns out that there was some aspect of my information that they didn't like so they said that they e-mailed me and when I didn't respond they cancelled the order. First there was nothing wrong with the info that I gave them, but more to the point I never recieved any e-mail advising of any issue with my order. I just got off the phone with the exceptionally useless CSR and am no further forward. They're going to look into whether they sent an e-mail... judging by the way she said it there isn't going to be much of an investigation. I kind of know how these things work as I managed a call center years ago. I doubt it'll get past the tier 1 server guy. "no, no, our machines are infallable."

Ummmmm okay. Current employee here....just want to point some simple facts out.
1. All extended warrenty info is kept on their computers. Provided you, as a customer actually *READ* the confirmation screen that shows your name and address.
2. There are two types of extended plans, service plans (which REPAIR the item) and replacement plans (which is an instore replacement or store credit).
3. After working in retail for about 7 years now, you'd be hard pressed to convince me that ANYTHING is truly "built to last". I have Sony PS2 controllers that lasted barely a year. Never abused, just used heavily. I got new ones for more than free, the price had dropped and I was given store credit for the amount I originally paid, happened to be about 8 bucks less. Free candy!
4. Oh its going to Italy? Perfectly fine! Best Buy offers service plan drop off locations around the world. Or they will send you packaging and ship it.
5. SERVICE plans also protect against DUST....heat....humidity...and electrical surge. Now I won't go so far as to insult your intelligence, but hey you are aware that heat and dust is one of the primary sources of failure in electronic devices.
6. What isn't covered. Physical damage/Accidental damage/Water Damage/Loss/Theft. Seems pretty reasonable, considering it should NEVER EVER BE SOLD AS INSURANCE!

Quit of bit of you have meantioned that if the product sucks or "could" break...such as the 360 then why do retailers sell these "crappy" items? Well, here is the answer, it's because idiots like you purchase them! Then, get angry when the 90 day warranty expires and the unit breaks. Who do you turn to? It's not Microsoft, Noooo it's the store that sold it to you. Perhaps, you should not be buying these "crappy" products. Furthermore, FutureShop and it's parent company are the worlds largest CE retailer in the world. Must be doing something right, and if the "extended plans" are such crap, then the people must be really stupid for buying them. Who are those people? People like you who shop there.
One more thing, for the person who purchases 16GBs of RAM at a FS or BB is stupid and doesn't know what he's doing as all RAM prices are overpriced and he could purchase it much cheaper elsewhere.

Actually the Best Buy protection plans make a heck of a lot of sense, and are very viable. Since a person has the choice to say yes or no to whether they want it or not, it's no big deal.
But here is why Best Buy's protection plans are good. Electronics do malfunction, no too often, but they do. So say you bought an XBox 360, get it home, didn't purchase Best Buy's protection plan, and it fucks up in like a week. That means you have to ship your unit back to Microsoft under they're warranty and will definitely cost you more than $20 from packaging protection and shipping costs. Plus the fact that you'll have to wait weeks to get your 360 back.
If you purchase the $20 protection plan, the unit is now covered by a Best Buy warranty. So now when your 360 fucks up in a week, you can take that unit back to Best Buy, and they'll replace it on the spot with a brand new unit. To me, that's well worth $20.
It definitely is a marketing strategy to get more money from people no doubt, but on the other hand, it can be worth it if you're one of the people who end up with a malfunctioning unit. (not to be mistaken for impotence either)

I worked at a best buy for two months about six years ago, and it wasn't exactly a customer-is-always-right operation.
We weren't to allow anyone to leave the store without being offered an MSN ISP disc (I guess the store got $1 for each given out), and it was a mortal sin for a computer to be sold without a service plan, printer, gold plated cables, a gallon or two of ink, and a battery backup.

Anytime I purchase a CD at best buy(rare, but it does happen) they ALWAYS(without fault) ask if I'd like to buy their protection plan. Like a dolt, I once asked what the terms were. The clerk said that I was protected against anything except for user inflicted damage...which seemed a tad bit interesting to me. So I asked the clerk if they replaced products based on manufacturing defects. He said yes, it's required by law(as I was extremely aware of). So I said, "So ruling out user inflicted damage and a manufacturing defect, what exactly does the $10 protection plan protect me from?". I guess I was being a little hopeful when thinking he would reply with "Your speakers opening a portal to hell forcing you to compete Tron style in the latest verson of jDoom" but he simply stated, "Anything else!" with a smile. They gave me the same story when I bought my 360. What is worse is the fact that they use this "upsell" tactic with many of the items they sell becuase of the profits margins in protection plans.
Unless you are purchasing a very expensive item in almost every case protection plans are a ripoff.

Had the same experience when I was buying a GameCube for my kid for Christmas - high pressure warranty sales.
I told the sales guy I didn't want to spend $30.00 to protect $100.00. In response, he walked away and muttered, "It's your funeral."

Working for best buy, yes we're trained to offer the service plan. Deal with it, the 360 itself comes with several issues that affect some people. Ever hear of the red rings of the death? Means you have to contact Microsoft directly and ship it back. I remember hearing the story about a guy who had to wait 2+ weeks just to get a replacement. With a service plan you walk into a best buy, and leave with a new 360 if something is wrong with it.
Is the service plan good for everything? No. Is it expensive? Sometimes it is. But you have to think about the product you;re buying and whether or not you want to go through the hassal of dealing with the manufacturers warrenty. And no I'm not some mindless best buy drone. I dont like my job that much and I'll trash my job like some other people but honestly if you're going to make a complaint do it about something remotely intelligent.
