For all the good times I have had in FPS-games, I still remember the Wolfenstein 3-D games as a nonstop source of entertainment. That game made me buy a pc. Well, that game and Dune 2.
Hi, well funny you should say that. I worked a lot with the Wolf code a few years ago. I was blown away when ID released it. I actually did a port to DOS 32 bit mode. Had to chop out so much stuff...page chunking, real mode and all that gunk :/ ewww. My objective was to retrace Mark Dochterman's footsteps as I wanted to make a Rise of the Triad clone. ROTT is just so AWESOME (and based on the Wolf code of course) :) I pestered 3DRealms for so long to release the ROTT code ...and you know...when I'd given up and moved on to other projects they went and released the code LOL :)
It would be cool to do a 32bit/windows/GL version of Wolf. In fact I think there was one knocking around at one point. Unfortunately, I don;t have my 32 bit Wolf anymore (might be archived somewhere) and no time. When I put the idea about in the Wolf community several years ago, no one was interested...they were quite happy with playing, editing and tweaking the DOS version...fair play to them!!! :)
That would be a good idea, although I'm extremely busy with school. DirectX 9 seems very versatile and transparent, but I wouldn't add any latest generation bells and whistles - it simply doesn't suit a game with a raycaster engine. But reimplementing Wolf3D's tradition features with Directx9's refined API would be a good idea.
HBD Wolfie! We had many a great times together. :) I remember Wolfie being the first '3D' game I've ever seen. My friend had one of those early Amiga computers, and I thought wow, that looks amazing, I couldn't believe something like that could be achieved. :o
BTW, I think jwolf runs pretty good and looks ace, but you prolly know about it already. It dosen't use polygonal models I don't think, but I like sprites better anyway. Now all we need is mp support. :)
Taking advantage of DirectX 9 (...and, btw, why not OpenGL? It'll be available to Linux and Mac this way :-) means nothing more than blurry textures :-P. See Doom Legacy in hardware accelerated mode.

JC work hard, and see the real things inside the organic game industry, a lot of work, paper, changes and RISKS. Management! and never only design laws, is necessary the both sides, engine and art.
Romero is a great game designer, i hope the next project shows a lot of great code, art and Romero design ideas.

wolf is not too oldie for play more than 5 minutes... the question is, wolf works fine! daikatana much more modern, represent the total demolition of ion structure, and a worst game yeah! years of development and the final product is very bad.. ugly and boring game. popular opinion? hell yes! looots of people around the globe. the worst unreal engine game ever.
romero is not george lucas, bad days happens. hey, george lucas legacy creates the digital movie industry, rox too!
Anonymous..I believe Daikatana was a Quake 2 engine game (originally Quake 1) not an Unreal engine game as you suggest. BTW Daikatana had some advanced features that people take for granted these days but were new at the time. The "buddy" system for example were bots played on your side. You will see that in many modern games now for example KillZone etc. Remember Daikatana SHIPPED - and on several platforms too - a remarkable feat in its own right.
Coming back to Wolf. Yes it is an old game, but still worth more than five minutes. I also played it's big brother, Rise Of The Triad regularly until quite recently (deathmatch with my son) using direct cable network. In other words old games can still be a lot of fun! :)
It's good to remember the old games, especially seminal games such as Wolfie. If you dig out the old code you will see Romero wrote quite a lot of the UI stuff and some memory management code. Carmack himself is quoted as saying "Romero was critical to the early success of ID". Romero has proved himself over and again as a talent.

jDoom is fairly the best =P But I only actually ever use it for playing the original IWADs single player =S For PWADs I use ZDoom and play online with ZDaemon... Anyway... ^.^ jDoom is wonderful!

Doom3 is very good, the engine is very powerfull, run on athlon 650 mhz! try Farcry in same situation... but like Doom, Doom3 shows a simple hystory.. today games need more than weapons and keys.
quake4 is good too, waitinhg for quakewars, looks fantastic!
i love the visual of modern games doom3, farcry, fear... but need lots of hardware stuff. multiplayer and fun only with doom, heretic and hexen. the cooperative mode, my god! perfect :)

Ahh good old wolf3D. Maybe not the first, but that's the one that introduced me to the genre way back when.
I'm still partial to the newer mods for classic Doom that take in the Wolf sprites and make some maps in the flavor of wolfenstien. Far more fun nowdays than the original game for me.
I wish someone would port it, and make multiplayer, because we were recently doing a WWII unit in class, and I showed my teacher Wolfenstein, and he totally flipped. I wonder how it is that a high schooler knows more about a game that old than his teacher does.
See, if you could make a front-end like Legacy compatible with Wolf3d, now that would just make me cry...

I'd like to remind them of something from Shakespeare: "The evil men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with thier bones." Daikatana was a good effort. I loved all of the other games as well. Look at how much good has been done, and you bug him about one thing that failed. Come on, grow up. Grow a pair, at least. He didn't have to do any of it.
Anyone remember 'Spear of Destiny' the addon pack? Good times. Came on 5.25's. Played Wolfenstein on my totally smoking 386 sx 16mhz with 2meg of ram and a crazy big 20meg hd. Which later actually dual booted slackware and dos, haha.
10 years later, having not played it for probably 9 years at least, I still remember the first 5 minutes or so of gameplay in detail.
When I for the first time felt myself BJ Blazkowicz - I thought that it is the greatest game of all times. Now has passed 14 years and my opinion has not changed!

Instead of having a huge amount of work to do by producing a port for the original Wolf3d game. I've been thinking of recreating the game using the Quake 3 engine. At least by doing this I'll be able to add multiplayher functionality without too much difficulty.
What I'm worried about is, if the game is created in a new engine would it loose its fun element? Of course I can give the user an option to play with or without mouse input but, what I'm really thinking about, is the look and feel of the game.
I remember I played it first when i was 4 yrs old. Now im 11 and I create model for NewWolf. I think DooM 3 is very bad, only the engine that I loved.
Why DooM III bad? Because this team was not the original... only 2 Carmacks (and assistants) left. No Romero, no McGee, no Ray. Now the team is not the same. You know what I say.

These 2 spells will make you pretty much rohan crone invincible with nearly no need for potting. For your PVP you are gonna need to rely on your ability to maximize your Rapid Lock spell and be able to use your rohan gold to Health to mana spell efficiently. They problem for a typical Dekan Sage build is to not supply the rohan online crone needed to sustain these spells. Mana guard is where this build is going to shine and make you pretty much rohan money invincible for 60 seconds which is more than enough time to dispatch most classes in PVP. Rohan is cool so far, much easier than most free games without any rohan online gold that starts spazzes on you.
It is also can not live without eve isk. Here, for the violence or robbery had been friends apologize in the eve online isk. I request members are on the local increase or decrease in the number of judgments quickly in buy isk. The game has a good excellence is that the cheap eve isk. The other side rather than back into the space station is POS, and buy eve online isk.
