Windows Vista: I love it!

I consider myself an early adopter and I love trying out new operating systems as soon as possible. I was in the Vista beta a while back but it ran pretty bad on my old computer system (3.4ghz, GeForce 6600).

But as soon as Vista was officially released I had to get me some Ultimate. Hey, I like the black box. The signed version wasn't at Fry's when I went there, in fact, there were very few Ultimates that day.

I'll keep the story short but basically it took me an entire week to get my computer running Vista nice and stable the way it should run. And the problem was entirely the network card (D-Link Extreme N; I installed it on XP and had the same problems). I changed to a Netgear and everything went perfect, no more lockups. I went through 3 motherboards, got a huge CPU fan, etc. And it ended up being the wireless card. Sigh.

Anyway, to actually get Vista running the way it really should I had to upgrade my computer: new motherboard (Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5), 2 gigs of Corsair 3200c2 2-3-3-6, new CPU (AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+; 2.6ghz x2) and a new video card (GeForce 7900 GTX). My Windows Experience Index is at 5.2 (CPU being the lowest score; 5.9 for the other scores). The highest WEI you can get is 5.9 so it's a pretty nice system. I was looking at the Vista laptops Fry's is selling and they're all sitting at WEI 3.0.

I've been reading some reviews about gaming under Vista and I'm finding no sluggishness at all. I'm playing Half-Life 2 with maxed resolution (1920x1200) and it runs like a dream. Other games are just as great with Vista (WoW @ 1920x1200 is awesome). I'm playing old games like Ghost Recon, Quake 1, DOOM 2, etc. and the compatibility is great.

Here's a quick rundown review:

Stability: Vista is totally rock solid. I haven't had to reboot my computer in a week it's that stable. If something goes haywire it clamps down on it and fixes the problem. Under XP if your explorer.exe got jacked and pegged your processor at 100% you had to End Process on it and basically had to do a reboot. I haven't experienced this under Vista yet and I've been doing a lot with it. So, stability is just amazing.

Look: I absolutely love the look of Vista. The Aero interface looks polished, professional, but also fun. I'm not envious of the Mac anymore now that Vista is all 3D and uses alpha-blending in nice, subtle ways - although as soon as I can easily run a Mac that has Vista AND OS X Leopard on it and switch between them easily I think I'll be sold on it. But for now, Vista makes XP look like a toy OS. It's more fun and I love the customization.

Speed: With the proper memory, CPU and GPU you can get Vista to run extremely fast. With the hardware upgrade I just did, my previous Intel 3.4ghz, GeForce 6600 rig under XP felt SLOW compared to my new Vista rig. So, speed isn't really an issue.

Hardware Compatibility: Here's where Vista gets negative marks from many reviews - you basically MUST upgrade your system to work well with Vista. Is that a bad thing? NO. Get new hardware every couple years, you'll enjoy life more. :) And you don't need to upgrade your hard drives or DVD burner, etc. Just the essentials. The Netgear wireless card that worked in my new system isn't really new either. Hardware manufacturers are releasing Vista beta/final drivers every day as fast as they can. Total compatibility is within reach. But get new stuff and you'll be good to go.

Software Compatibility: Vista is pushing forward toward the 64-bit era so older software is getting harder to run. DOSBox v65 does a great job for the old games but you cannot run them natively anymore. Running any old DOS game natively under XP was a problem if the game used any sound cards (PC speaker was just fine). But, reports are that games running DOSBox under Vista run the games better than it did under XP!

So, to sum it up I'm extremely impressed and very happy with Vista. It works amazingly well and is so stable that I have even less fear of a crash than with XP (which was pretty rare already). I can't see myself going back to XP at all. Windows just keeps getting better. Well, it's been 22 years so I should hope so. :)

Do you use Firefox or IE7? I'm asking this because some people i know and used Vista (Home not-the-Basic-one-but-the-other :-P) said that they had problems with IE7 crashing all the time.

Vista has some good features, but I think Microsoft have very little to show for the time and resources they’ve spent on it. In my opinion, they have taken one step forward and two steps back. Sure I like some of the improvements in Explorer and the security model, but it runs considerably slower and less stable on my computer compared to XP and Ubuntu.

I admit, my computer is horribly out of date (Athlon XP 1700+, 768 MB RAM, Geforce 6600), but I don’t see the need upgrade my system to run Quake 3 over 30 FPS just for mostly gimmicky features, which I have no need for. Why should the OS be soaking up all my system resources, leaving little for applications and games? I experienced several crashes from programs that ran fine under XP. Yes, I did upgrade them to the Vista versions.

Apple managed to increase the performance of MacOS X with newer versions, while still adding new features and making the OS considerable more stable. Why can’t Microsoft do the same? And Eye candy is of no real importance to me either (I run the classic theme under XP). I have little love for XP, but I will stick with it until I can afford a Mac or Linux gets serious on the desktop.

I just have to comment on this...

First of all, it's obvious that you have plenty of money to spend on hardware. For many others the situation is quite different...
I live in Brazil and my salary is about R$ 2000 (about $900), which is a pretty good salary here since most things (food, clothes, etc.) are priced a lot cheaper here in Brazil anyway... Except for computer hardware which is actually more expensive here than in the US. So since I also have to pay that phone bill and my kid's diapers I can't afford to spend my money on that GeForce 7900 and some GB's more DDR2 RAM.
From my perspective, it almost sounds like an insult to tell people to upgrade their hardware every few years... Well sure, I would, if you donate them to me. (Can I leave my Froogle wishlist with you?)
Now THAT'S why Vista is getting bad reviews: They're forcing people to upgrade, which is a very bad thing.

Secondly, you should know that Linux distributions have had all those features Vista calls "new" for quite a while. (Kinda like Mozilla used tabs ages before IE)
And the great thing is that all those features on Linux work on a lot less then what you need to get Vista running properly. My Pentium 4 1,5 GHz with 512MB EDO SDRAM and GeForce FX 5200 does all those flashy things (and a lot more like 3D desktops etc) that you do on Vista. Ohh, before you complain, if I did have a decent PC I could run most Windows games fine through Cedega on Linux.
Do a search on "beryl" at Youtube to get an idea what I'm talking about.

Third, I don't know why you actually would want to use an OS that limits you in what you may do with it. (http://yogarine.net/2006/11/windows-vista-license-vs-gpl.html)

I'm dying to upgrade my PC, but for now I can't. But when I do, the LAST thing I'll install is Windows Vista. It's just no match for Ubuntu.

Use your brains dude, get rid of Vista and install Ubuntu. At least it'll save you 6+ GB of HD space. (Ohh wait, you probably got a 500GB SATA HD...)

@alfredo

Sorry dude, it's just that I got a bit fired up reading a post by a developer who a while ago talked so much about NeXTSTEP and suddenly goes drewling all over Vista, talking about features that Linux users have been using for ages. (Especially stability and security, which shouldn't even be "features" but requirements for an OS.)

Also, you should to understand I don't envy him at all for his rig (well, maybe a little :P), I only use my PC for webdesign/php programming. I have my PS2/PSP for games. (And soon, hopefully, either a PS3 or a Wii, haven't decided yet.)
It's mostly the line "you basically MUST upgrade your system to work well with Vista. Is that a bad thing? NO. Get new hardware every couple years, you'll enjoy life more." that hit the spot. Ahh well, I'll just leave it at this.

Ohh, just one thing, it ain't magic doing those things on Linux at all. What *is* magic is Vista requiring those specs to do just some fancy glass and 3D effects.

Just two nice sites:

so... you had to buy a whole new computer just so you could run Vista.. wow, sounds like an incredible investment for an operating system that doesn't offer anything more than what a few third party applications can do to make XP work properly.

Of course your old machine (a friggin beast compared to what the majority of people own today) felt SLOW in comparison to the monster you had to build in order to get your high ranking on Vista... what a joke..

Do you really not see all of the contradictions here? Why should a software upgrade (OS or otherwise) EVER require a hardware upgrade, especially to THAT extreme of a measure?? Isn't the point of upgrading software to make it run faster, be more stable and secure?

Yes, I upgraded my major components to run Vista. What's the problem with that? Most gamers upgrade their hardware occasionally to run the latest and greatest game!

I think upgrading my hardware to run the latest OS, the lifeblood of the entire computing experience, is a pretty damn good reason for upgrading.

That excuse holds much more water than "I need a new motherboard, CPU, memory and GPU to run DOOM3".

While there may be a lot of crap open source software out there, there's also a lot of crap commercial software too. I wouldn't say Linux is zero quality though. It's actually a very stable, powerful and flexible operating system. Why else would 75% of the worlds top 500 super computers be running it? [http://www.top500.org/stats/28/osfam/]

All politicians from any political party and from any part of the political spectrum say a lot of words with little or no action. Funny how Vista hasn't lived up to the Microsoft hype and many talked about features have been dropped. Open source zealots do give me the shits though. They're no better than Ballmer and his spin.

I have the same kind of passion for tech stuff. Even though it may not be the world's greatest thing ever invented, I still want to get it and try it out. I'm also a gamer at heart, and I make sure to get every system on the market (I even had an N-Gage).

I also have Vista through the Betas, and I'm still running RC1 on my 3 year old computer. Beta 2 blew, but RC1 holds up very well, and I've been able to run pretty much everything without any problems. I have a comp with 2.8 GHz P4, 1GB Ram, and ATI 9800 Pro. I haven't tried any games on it, as I'm a lazy person and don't want to search for updated drivers. For basic comp usage, like Internet and stuff, Vista gets the job done. I'm assuming I will need new hardware for the latest games, but that would be a necessity with any OS I have currently.

After using RC1 for months, I would like to get Vista Home Premium, but I don't see a huge need to spend that money just yet. XP is still pretty strong for an OS. I'll probably just get it with the new comp I plan to buy at some point.

I still go back and forth between RC1 and XP, and it seems fine for now. And to think, it only cost me $10.

I'm a games programmer, who has recently upgraded to an Intel 1.86Ghz Dual Core with 2GB DDR2 RAM after four years of using a Toshiba Satellite laptop (2.6Ghz, 512MB RAM with 64MB integrated graphics and no shader support). I'm using the 8800GTX (768MB) graphics card on the basis that it supports shader 4, DirectX 10 and OpenGL 2.

I'm also running XP Business SP2, even though I could get Vista (Business) for free from my University. Why? Well, due to a small oversight I currently only have one, IDE, 40GB hard disk drive. That's fine for my purposes - assuming I only run one OS. So why did I choose XP over Vista?

I've been running XP for four years. And, seeing as the only reason I'd want to upgrade to Vista is to develop DirectX 10 games (hugely unlikely, as everything I develop uses SDL and OpenGL so that it can also run under Linux or MacOSX) I don't see any reason why I should switch from XP.

Everything "New" in Vista has been kicking around in other OS's for ages. Yes, the new features will hopefully make it more flexible/useful/stable but it's really irksome to hear M$ fanboys bleat about how "new" the features are. I know one such guy who absolutely adores Vista, but do you remember when Apple introduced the "Mighty Mouse"? He got really annoyed, saying "Three button, wheeled mice have been around for years! STOP CLAIMING THAT YOU INVENTED THEM APPLE!"

It's basic requirements are far too high. It's an OS. And it requires SHADER support? MacOSX looks and runs fantastic at 1280x1024x32@60Hz - and I'm using an old-style Mac Mini (1.25Ghz PowerPC, 256MB RAM, 32MB ATI Radeon 8500). Vista takes up far more system requirements than it should.

I don't hate Vista... but I also don't see why I should bother upgrading. XP does everything I want it to and Vista is far too power-hungry. I will upgrade eventually - but that'll probably be in the far off future, when I have no option.

Actually, if you also count the freelance stuff, I make more R$2000. And I'll probably get a raise soon too. But I rather spend money on a car to take my family to the beach in the weekends, then on upgrading my PC to run Vista and play the 4234765th WW2 FPS game for the PC.

Saying that you need to upgrade your machine to run Vista is really a non-argument. This argument has come from those detestable, brainless Apple ads.

Microsoft haven't released a proper mainstram version of Windows for 6 years. Do you not think that its reasonable to accept that the new OS will be a major leap forward?

And no one's going to stop supporting XP. It's not as if you're being held at gunpoint by Microsoft. I think its too popular to hate Microsoft and that often gets in the way of making more pertinent points.

(e6600 Core2 Duo, gf7950GT, 2gb pc2-6400) and its fast; but i dual booted vista, and besides loading, it runs almost twice as fast as xp, with all the effects turned on.

once you disable a bunch of things, like the notification crap, that asks you for permission to breathe, it runs rather nicely.

There are compatibility issues with some things though, like Visual studio 2003, basically if i want to use vista i have to buy 2005, because basic features don't work.
i don't plan on using vista on anything but my laptop any time soon though, i only installed it on my desktop (without product key) just to see how it would run.

oh and i get a WEI of 5.1, i don't remember which had the lowest score, but almost everything was around 5.9.

I like the wars and stereotypes you find here in the comments. Saying "retarded freeware crap" means stereotyping people: saying that all freeware developers are idiots. Besides, the people who develop things for free have a certain idealism: to give people good things, for free. And anyone can edit it to improve it.

Seriously, stereotyping is a bad thing, because it's never EVER true on a whole group.

id Software released an entire episode from both Doom and Quake FOR FREE.

They then went on to release the source of both of the above games FOR FREE.

Finally, that nice Mr. John Romero released the Quake BSP map source files FOR FREE.

I should think that anyone who visits this site ought to be hugely in favour of free things.

Just wanted to post once again, to clear up the confusion between freeware, shareware and Free Software.

First you need to understand the difference between Proprietary and Open Source.

Proprietary software is software that is released without the source code. The source code is only known to the developer.

Open Source Software (OSS) is software that is released along with it's source code, so that anyone that's interested can see how it works and modify it.

Now, Freeware is Proprietary software that is released for free. Sometimes that doesn't make sense to some people but most developers release freeware to make money with website ads and service. Or perhaps they sell other paid software.
Most freeware may be freely redistributed by end users.

Shareware is Proprietary software of which a part of the functionality is released for free... If you want to have complete funcionality you need to pay. I think the best example here would be Doom. :)
Shareware is usually free redistributable.

Free Software is OSS that is released with a license that says that you may redistribute it as much as you want, and even ask a fee, as long as you give others the same license and rights that you have, so you also need to give others access to the source code and any possible modification that you made to it. The famous GPL is an example of a Free Software license.

So,
Doom was Shareware (now it's Free Software because iD Software was so nice to release it under the GPL).
Windows Vista is paid proprietary software. (And one with the most horrible EULA's I've seen in my life.)
Linux is Free & Open Source Software.

Hope that clears some things up.
