Playing around with the Doom builder..

Just started doing that...i'm learning the basics right now since i've never used it before. After i get used to this editor and the results look cool i'll probably try out a Quake editor too :)
At this point i've only done a little level for doom1 - it's really basic ( no stairs and cool stuff yet).
I just wish this editor would be more easy to use.. John told me that the editor he created for doom was on NextStep computers ( aprox. 12 years ago) and it was way easier to use than Doombuilder except that it didnt have some of the cool stuff this one has (like the 3D mode and some of other functions). I "begged" John for his editor but he said it'll be a hassle to try to move the editor from Nextstep to pc so i guess i'll stick to DoomBuilder for now... and hope that someone will simplify it someday (soon)!

Can you ask John to release the source? If he doesn't have the time to port it, other people might. It would also be an interesting piece of Doom history to have around.

John indicated in #zdaemon some months back that he thought Doom Builder was a pretty cool editor and he was glad to see that the editing community was still going.

Oh also, MacOS X is based on Nextstep, so you could probably get it running on a mac fairly easily.

Does John still have his old Nextstep computer?

He said he doesn't have the Nextstep computer anymore - that was at id. He has the files with the doom builder somewhere tho.

Fools, Dmapedit v4.3 was the BEST dos level editor for doom, however it is old and out of date, the authors who created it said they were going to release v5.0 on Windows and they never did.

NextStep would be quite portable to Linux I'd assume.

Nice that gamers still cares about the classic games like doom I and Quake I.
Just because a game is old, doesn't make it bad.
Infact, I feel the older the game the better. Ages like wine... ;)

Yea, Nextstep code should port to Mac OS X pretty easily. That'd be a fun project. Too bad I don't have time at the moment for fun projects :(

You probably know this, but one of the developers of Doom Builder, Pascal vd Heiden (codeimp) has attacked the Doom community several times over the last week. He is launching DDOS attacks at the Zdaemon master server using a virus placed in a Doom Builder patch and given to SkullTaggers. He has shut down Zdaemons ability to register new players, and blocked existing players from using the free service. He was aparantly trying to blame the attack on SkullTag. If possible, could you, or John and maybe some of the other Doom developers have a talk with this guy and ask him to stop? Hopefully, he still respects some things about the game. He seems to have a great deal of creativity and coding skill, as seen in his pre-breakdown work. It would be a shame to see his talent go to waste. Who would hire him in any computer capactiy knowing that he does such things? His Doom site is www.codeimp.com. The only emails I can find is gherkin@xodemultimedia.com, but I'm sure John is a better web-tracker than I'll ever be.
Thanks.

That's really interesting. Id's own editor is easier than modern ones? I found Doombuilder quite easy but that's because eight years ago I was struggling with DOS editors like Deu.
