plus there's speedrunning modes which aren't just getting from A to B. like maxkills. speedrunning is really about replayability - playing the game in different ways to extend the amount of time you can enjoy it. there's only so many times you can play through the same map without trying to do something special and not get bored

For me, the fun has always been in getting killed in a level on every single way provided by the level designer

Well, at least you guys have found your roots

Speedrunning rules!  I came up with the idea of Speedrunning back when we were developing Wolfenstein 3D -- that's why we included the par times in all our games.

A related question: I guess it was your idea to include demo recording and playback?

We got episode 4 out in a hurry, so we weren't doing speedruns to calculate low par times.

Here's an interesting fact: when I was doing the par times for our games, I would always add 30 seconds to it and round it to the nearest 30 seconds, just so people could see it was somehow possible.  I definitely made the pars in a faster time than that at the end of the map.

Ooh. Now we can figure out Romero's times for all the maps. To within 15 seconds or so, anyway. Hehe

(Fun fact about Henning's 30NM runs - at least the last two, I don't remember exactly how many, complete every level in under the par time...)

That's rather interesting, John. Actually, makes me wonder about your time on DOOM2's MAP02 (par 1:30)

It was not until early 1996 that the speed record of the map reached the 1 minute mark

Interesting tidbit: every DOOM and DOOM2 map has been now done under half par.
