Who's the guy responsible for Ultimate Doom because the new episode didn't fit with the series and the new levels didn't have the flare or style that the previous episodes had in fact why did they make an ultimate Doom it did not offer anything new but more levels and a few new  wall textures here and there.

Actually the decision to create Ultimate DOOM was brought up by me but it was going to happen eventually.

You see, every id Software game was released as shareware, then at some point down the line, we would release the registered version into retail stores (where previously you could only purchase the full registered version over the phone).

Ultimate DOOM was the retail version of DOOM, but with an extra episode.  I thought that we should create an extra episode and give the buyers more value, so Episode 4 was born.  I had several people creating maps for the episode, which is why the consistency isn't there like Episode 1.

And the 4th episode was supposed to be VERY tough, which is why we had lots of outrageous names for the levels.  We were putting together the 4th episode as early work on Quake was happening and I was busy doing executive producer work on Hexen.

I was always pretty happy with "Thy Flesh Consumed" as an extra episode.

I thought of it more like an alternate reality of Doom, rather than the 4th part that continued the other 3.

Ep4 is harder than french kissing a cobra on nightmare....

I can breeze through the first 5 levels, but E4M6 is where I always get stuck.
And on Nightmare!, E4 is a HUGE pain in the arse.

It's set in the building you see in the scrolling graphic at the end of Episode 3, so yes it does "fit in".

Episode 4 was infinitely better than episode 3.

What's wrong with new levels? Especially when ID were kind enough to release a patch to add them to the game FOR FREE? It also let wad makers have 36 level wads instead of just 27

BTW, there weren't any new wall textures, only a new sky.  But it really didn't need any new textures anyway.

I loved Episode 4.  The only dissapointments were that there was no new boss and that there wasn't a new intermission map, but oh well.

Ask AdamH, and he'll tell you Ep4 on nightmare is about the second hardest Doom movie after whole Doom2 on nightmare. There's a list of all the authors of Ep 4 maps somewhere, let's see if I can't dig it out...

Ah, after some Googling, here we go:

E4M1 : HELL BENEATH by American McGee
E4M2 : PERFECT HATRED by John Romero
E4M3 : SEVER THE WICKED by Shawn Green
E4M4 : UNRULY EVIL by American McGee
E4M5 : THEY WILL REPENT by Tim Willits/Theresa Chasar
E4M6 : AGAINST THEE WICKEDLY by John Romero
E4M7 : AND HELL FOLLOWED by John Anderson
E4M8 : UNTO THE CRUEL by Shawn Green
E4M9 : FEAR by Tim Willits

So now you know.

BTW, John, bet you didn't think E4M2 could be finished in 16 seconds when you made it   . I like that run...

I dunno.  E4 had a more rustic setting than doom2, but it also wasn't as hellish as E3...

(heh...hellish E3)

I didnt want to make a new topic for this trivia but thought it would fit in this one. There's a quiz in some other forum... but the main one that's cool is 3dactionplanet.com's Trivia.

the 3DAP quiz is a bit inaccurate in some places. Like the imp question - makes no sense because pistol damage is to some degree random. Imps have 70 hit points, pistol does either 5, 10 or 15 damage at random. So you *can* kill an imp with 5 shots, but it can also take up to 14 (though the chances of that are tiny).

E4M2 is a pain in the ass until you get the switches in the beginning on.
