Sorry, this is off-topic but still somewhat related.     Did that make any sense at all?

Activision has released two new official DOOM III screenshots and they simply look amazing!

Sure, there are a few things people keep nitpicking at but they're just being trolls. So don't be a troll and admire the shots for what they are... an amazing looking game!

"Those graphics are sexy."

But the zombies are not.

They are cool pictures, but i'm waiting till I can PLAY Doom3 before I commit to saying if it's good or bad.

Quake3 had good graphics too remeber, but the gameplay...haha what gameplay....

Yeah, I would love to see the return of the gun-totin' zombies from the first two games. Mowing them down (especially the Shotgun Guy) was just so satisfying.

The new DOOM's zombies are a bit too Resident Evil-ish for me, but then again, I haven't played the game so I can't say much.

I just hope they're not all slow and lumbering like in the leaked E3 demo. Regardless, the game looks amazing. The graphics are better than anything on the market (and anything announced, as far as I've seen.) The gameplay looks to be dark and spooky.

Sounds like a winner to me. And even if it's not, at least we know Raven will make 200 hit games with it!

Gary

The original DOOM/DOOM II zombies were slow and lumbering.

My thoughts about Doom III, which I'm posting here because I have nowhere else to put them:

So far, all we've seen from Doom has been very pale gray/cyan metal, except for that one scene where it's all on fire.  I hope the whole game's not like that, but I predict it will be, at least in the first few levels.

Why?  Because every time somebody comes up with a cool new effect, often a game will be made just for showing off that effect.  For instance, when Doom came out, id now had the ability to do diagonal walls, variable floors, floor/ceiling textures, variable light levels, outdoor areas, etc. and they totally took advantage of that.  If you look at the level design for episode 1, there is nary a square room in the entire episode.  All of the walls are crazy and diagonal, and there are stairs and dark secret passages and stuff everywhere, 'cause they were taking advantage of the new technology.  And, after a while, the levels (especially user levels) started looking more orthagonal, now that everybody had gotten used to the Cool New Effect.  Then when Quake came out, the Cool New Effect was the ability to do real 3D floors and slanted floors and ceilings, so they seemed to take every chance they could get to put slants and bridges and arched doors and stuff to show it off.  Similarly, when Sega introduced the Genesis/Megadrive, they wanted something to show how fast the system was, so they created Sonic the Hedgehog.

I think Doom III is another one of those things.  They've got an insanely cool bump-mapping/shadow effect, and the best way to highlight that (pun intended) is to make everything grayish, so the differences in light level stand out.

I just hope that by the end of the game, we get to see some pentagrams, and more of those "levels that are really living organisms" that we saw in Doom (and American McGee's Alice)  And it has to have a Dopefish, of course.

Well, from what id Software has said, they are going to return to the satanic/pentagrams/etc. roots in DOOM III. And I *think* I recall hearing that some of the levels will take place in Hell.

I can't wait...

as someone in this thread mentioned - there's a ShakyCam recording of the closed demo of Doom3 that was shown at E3; it's 10 minutes of nothing but ingame footage, and it's completely amazing. the lighting...*dies*. if you've not seen it, FIND IT NOW.

The shakycam recording (sorry for mentioning it    ) doesn't really do the demo justice...the thing played in a booth with a 5.1 Surround Sound set up and amazing audio. Since the video has only one audio track and lacks that certain bass, it really takes away a good half of the quality that the real live demo showed.

Say...to anybody who saw the demo...does anyone think that the voice acting really sucks? The scientist dude didn't sound right at all! Someone tell id to hire real actors...
