http://w1.370.telia.com/~u37017278/QuakePix/  Contains old pre-release screens made from old converted Doom levels.

I found this along time ago. I'm guessing Quake was going to be a 2d shooter.

Man would I like to play some of those converted levels. Maybe we'll see a few since John is going to build up a Quake section.

A couple of years ago I came across a pre-release alpha of Quake.  No, I'm not going to tell you where.  No, I'm not going to send it to you, either.

There are some noteable differences.  Most of the maps are pretty much the same as the final ones, although some are a bit less populated.  A few niggling little differences: some maps use an ugly green sky that, I believe, was included in the final game but not actually used anywhere.  (If you want to see it in action, for some reason, check out  dm7.zip .)

Map E2M3 "The Crypt of Decay" has no Well of Wishes area.  Instead the Dopefish wall-texture is on the start map in a kind of tricky hidden area.

Map E2M6 "The Dismal Oubliette", of course, contains that whole cave area at the beginning that was later whacked out.

Map E4M2 "The Tower of Despair" starts with you falling through that hole in the ceiling instead of standing on the ceiling to the side of it-- ouch!

A couple of maps seem to be unfinishable.  Map E4M6 "The Pain Maze" seems to be missing a crucial switch or something, I think, but that map has always been, well, a pain for me so I might just be missing something.  Map END "Shub-Niggurath's Pit" is definitely unfinishable; you can telefrag the big jelly, but it just freezes in place without ending the game.  Not only that, but it's a completely different map design that's lame and ugly (in my humble opinion), too.

Some of the Slipgates have a nice animated floor that looks like a fan spinning below the grating.  An example is the one you step off of at the start of Map E1M1 "The Slipgate Complex".  Lost in favour of the all-important framerate, I suppose.

The 'Q' menu pointer doesn't rotate, it just blinks lighter and darker, kind of like the gun pointer in Wolfenstein 3-D/spearhead pointer in Spear of Destiny.

The console font is completely different, and looks rather like the one that eventually ended up in Quake II!

I can't get the file to work. I'd love to try the pre-release. I collect them.

Damn, the file just won't download      Each mirror I try I get an error message saying "server busy" or "530 This server only allows one login per host". I've tried everything, even downloading by Internet Explorer and it just doesn't work...

Can someone mirror this somewhere else, or something?

I've already mailed Electro to remove the pre-release from Quakepit.com a few months ago.

I've played the cave area bit (E2M10).  They should have left that in.

I think they 'cut it' pretty good when it came to the final version of Quake.

Yeah, losing the cave bit on the oubliette is a bugger, but all the other changes are for the better.

For all you people who can't get it to work, just get the E2M10 zip and forget the other changes as they are crap.
