Personally hell could be whatever you interpret it but i am strongly meaning that the ID folks wanted us to breath, live and sleep hell through this hell of a game. And i found out that those images and symbols  they made and the IRON maden like metallica like music brought a very understandable hell to us.

As i said before man can be afraid of what he knows more then what he knows and these images we all know from biblical stuff. goat , bull etc living dead... but somehow doom 3 in an attempt to improve those images cant cause those images are perfect like they were in doom 1 and 2 thats why i think i wont like this game because it wont spell out hell 2 me.  It will rather look like any other invasion of the earth game that bores me.

I think john or carmack had a vision something disturbing something bloody in their mind that they wanted to give to people... maybe it was their own hate for war and life some kind of protest ... some people make music some people kill some people make games like this.. I also think that ID software makes games that have pictures or dilemas according to their time.

Wolfenstein had a message about spionage and hitler and what was going on in the ww2 and ww1 something that had happened just before these games were made... also doom is perhaps an outrage about genetic experimenting and warfare..which is going on in todays sociaty and life era.

ANYWAY i am dissapointed that doom 3 had to insist on "improoving " the monsters ..but i am glad they are making a new one atleast.  I am also glad i made alot of people think about the idiology and storry of doom 1 and 2 and perhaps they will think more about the plot of the forth coming games.. lets face it BAD SECTOR is outmostly right that its what we imagine that makes what we feel that makes us phsycologically sick enough to go through hell and still be scared and inspired of the end sequences _

El.D.EVIL

I also have a question , ever since i was a little kid who played this game i would ocassionally let this thought get into my head that somehow hell would be such a place like doom where people kill each other to survive and monsters roam in an orgy to live uppon your flesh .. its not so unlikely thats how the animal kingdom is like.. is it only me who has been hounted by this thought... maybe ID software tought me to be afraid of hell and remind me how life could be 10 times worse did i say 10? i ment millions ... i dont want to hang on a meat hook do yuou?

No, Hell would be more like you being tortured by other, more powerful beings until the Doom guy comes and blows off your head

I don't ever recall dying at the end of Episode 1.  I remember getting very close but it always shifting to the end of Episode screen.  It is an interesting thought that you die and possibly go to hell.  I always thought it was meant that you came close to dying, but alas survived and arrived at the shores of hell.  Beats me though.  Just my opinion.

I think it's impossible to die at the end of E1.
The level ends first, i tried even firing rockets when i was about
to die.

I asked John about this and he said that you're supposed to die at the end of E1, and be resurrected in Hell.

How though. You don't go to hell, you go to that other moon. I guess he was re-encarnated to flesh when he went through the portal to earth. I don't thunk they thought it all through. I like the idea of being alive in hell anyway.

Yeah, who resurrects you, an Arch-Vile? And why would that happen at all? Plus indeed you're not in Hell, but on Deimos, which stands now at the Shores of Hell, not Hell itself (Episode 3.) By don't burden John with questions, else he'll have to justify what Episode 4 is; which he most likely answered already, and really, it's just an additional good set of maps, inserted in the middle of an existing game as best as possible for the circumstances (perhaps we could say "the path the marine takes to travel out of Hell to reach Earth once more.")

There's no clear indication that you're dead anywhere, and no reference to that later. I bet they just left it vague like that on purpose. Like, not even the marine knows whether he died at that ambush right after the teleport from one Anomaly to the other.

Discussing what Hell is in relation to the game doesn't lead anywhere unless you stick strictly to what the game offers (not much in respect to explanations); though Hell here obviously references Hell in most "common-sense" contexts, particularly a place where evil beings of malice and destrucion reside, yearning to come out and spread some havoc without justification. They're just evil, period. It's not like all the Hell-specific location names aren't there.

Considerations of the physical vs. spiritual are irrelevant and out of place here; the spiritual suits moral analogies and existential metaphors quite well, but not a "shoot 'em up" game... the only ghosts we'll get here are due to the "Arch-Vile bug."

Calling the monsters "aliens" can only refer to the fact that they're foreign to our world, but not to the usual sense found in Sci Fi literature. Else you need additional (and pretty stupid, from what we've seen) extrapolations, like what DOOM novels offer.
