LoneWolf's avatar is the fifth dumbest thing in gaming, according to Gamespy.

EDIT: Read the article before you post.

Eh.  I think 90% of the people out there still bear a grudge against Romero for Daikatana, and the other 10% love the game.  No middle ground, even if you haven't played the freaking game.

I think most people are indifferent. Back then the 90%/10% groupings you make may have applied, but now I doubt anyone gives it a thought.

I think the article and the comments are way off. Either the gamespy staff haven't played the game, or they are simply lieing about hating it.

How can you not love episodes 2/3 ?

Episode 1 is the only 'bug and frog murdering simulator' in the whole game, and even then less than half of it.

Makes you laugh because these people are meant to be industry gurus...

I can't speak for the Gamespy staff, but there were two things that turned me off to the game:

1.  "Romero's gonna make you his b****" is about as encouraging an advertisement as "Battlecruiser 3000 AD: The last thing you'll ever desire".  (BC3k's original ad showed a woman in lingerie, sprawled on a mattress.)

2.  Save crystals.  *twitches*

I think the reason there was such a backlash against Daikatana is because John Romero was such a key figure in making Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake, three of the pioneering games of the FPS genre.

When such a legend promised to revolutionize things a fourth time, it wasn't marketing hype -- it seemed possible and likely for history to repeat itself.  And when it didn't happen -- when most reviewers graded it as merely average -- people felt betrayed.

SBD: I hope you're not referring to me, there.  I didn't even play the demo long enough to form a lasting impression of the game.  I was just saying why I didn't buy it and why I thought some people haven't gotten over it.

Tech: I think it'll be an instant classic besides, but I agree with you nevertheless.  The team of Carmack & Romero was the driving force behind id Software's early successes.  The whole being greater than the sum of its parts, and so forth.

I've read the whole dumb thing article.
Many things are true, others not.

For Daikatana, i don't care, what others say.
I've played it. The only frog thing, is the first level. After that, a bit annoying level, i had many fun.

I've never played it online, but i liked the SP part.

For the ION Storm Thing, it was a story of many wrong decisions and errors, but when i look over at 3D Realms.....6 yrs+, and still no Duke 4ever.
I think its time to punch on another long time development record game.
But in the end, when the game appears on the stores, i will test it. When it is good, i will play it, when it is shit i will not play it.
No matter how long they worked on it.
When they think, they can pull that through, financial-wise ? .... Its their thing.

I along with many of you are on this forum because we respect John's talent. I've read many things about him, but I don't know the him and wouldn't dream to say that I understand what he must have gone through during the Ion Storm days. Having said that I do think that the Gamespot article gives an extremely fair version of what happened from what I've read else where. There's a link to it of John's page. I have yet to read Masters of Doom but I did pick it up last week. I'll have to get through it in the next few weeks.
I don't think people are ever going to get over it though. They won't remember it as much, but I think the gaming industry wants a pariah. It's like needing someone to blame things on... It's an annoying reality to how society works. John was and is such a key figure in the world of gaming that people jumped all over the whole affair. I'm sure one day someone else will make end up in the lime light and we can hope that the spotlight moves on.

I'ver heard of it, but I never played it. A friend of mine bought it and said it was cool. He dug the Japanese sword thing.
