The moderator issue got me thinking, as did the swamping of gaming discussion in highly off-topic chat in the main forum. I came to the conclusion that the forum was unwieldy and somewhat in need of a rethink. I talked to John and he was happy for me to gut it, and here you see the results. I ask that all fluff stays in Open Discussion, and that you behave everywhere, even where we have no moderators listed at present - I am running those forums, so don't be thinking you can get away with anything while nobody is watching

Anyway, in all seriousness, I hope this works better, and if you have feedback please don't hesitate to discuss it in the new feedback forum. Things may change again, as I iron out wrinkles in the board, but here's hoping nothing too drastic happens!

FYI Open Discussion, the forum formerly known as General Discussion, now resides in the General section, about halfway down the main forum list.

ummm yeah. Lumping Quake, Doom, Hexen etc into one big ass "id Games" group kinda sucks. It was nice before because if I felt like discussing or reading posts about a specific game I could go to that forum. Now it's all just thrown in together.... me no likie!

All the forums on this board moved at a crawl or didn't move at all, apart from the main one. This way some actual discussion may go on, the spam can stay out of the gaming stuff, and the games forums will actually be a bit more active. Since there was rarely traffic in any of the id forums apart from Quake and Doom, and even that was very slow I doubt there will be much hardship for those who are objecting to the merger. Try it for a month and get back to me then

The new format doesn't really bother me. I usually stayed in General Descussion anyway. Whatever floats yer boat.

EDIT: Although I did like the list of visitors at the top. That's really the only thing I don't like right away.

I'd really like to see an handheld games section if we could. Seeing as John wanted to focus on handhelds right now I think it would be good. I know we already have a Monkeystone section, it's just this way we can talk Monkeystone Handheld while talking on the rest of the industry at the same time. Right now the posts would likely stay in the General Gaming forum, and I think they deserve their own section. Just my thoughts...

It makes it a lot easier to look after a board if it has a small number of active, interesting forums than it is to look after one with a bunch of boring, dead ones, so what users thought of dead forums wasn't really on my mind when I did it.

I'm not the master. John is. It just happens that right now he doesn't need any hassles so he's not working the forum. The truth is I don't either, but I have a bit more time to spare than John and he's my buddy, so I am working the forums.

To make this into something I can do without eating into time I have committed to other things I'm making it a less of a hassle to run this place, so forgive me if I'm being a little practical and prosaic and don't feel the need to confer with the user base of the board - my attempt to make moderator elections a reality shows how well that works. Just believe me when I say I have made this place easier for me to deal with, while trying not to totally destroy what it is, and with feedback and complaints that have come to my attention in mind.

Constructive and detailed feedback is most welcome, but I will not respond to remarks such as "it bites". They don't help, they're not in any way informative, and after working my entire Friday night after work, to the small hours of Saturday morning with a bad headcold, reading that kind of pointless dig doesn't inspire me to be at all accommodating.

aditu616: I moved it to the bottom because, while it's nice to have it there, I thought having the forums themselves closer to the top of the page was an advantage. However, if you or anyone else would rather it went to the top let me know. It doesn't effect my ability to administer the board at all

satori: You think? Maybe no console forum then. That or combine them...? I just don't want to add so many forums that we're back at point A again!

Hey chiQita, in the iD Games Section there is the Stupid Fan Fiction post that ZZ and I play around in. It's not exactly iD Game related, but I don't want to see it blown away either.

So I was wondering, does it get moved to 'Open Discussion' or...?

Yeah, I know the one - isn't it fine in the id games forum? How would it get 'blown away'?

BTW sorry to all especially SBD about my previous post. It's all true, but I was feeling pretty foul last night and was a bit grumpy.

I suppose it's fine where it is. I didn't know if you wanted to move it because it's not strictly id games related.

Not anymore, anyways... but, of course, that could quickly change.
