I noticed that we've had a steady influx of hundreds of people (200-400+) of people in here yesterday.  I've also noticed that most of our new members have LLJK next to their name.

Not trying to point fingers at anyone, but the last time I was operating a channel, and about 200-420 people joined at once, and most of them had similiar tags on their names...the outcome forced me to use drastic measures - which were especially destructive.

Having said that, chiQ, can you check the IP addresses of those people that have tags on their names, as well as several sample IPs from the extremely high numbers of guests that we're having here?  I'm not asking you to give me the addresses, I just think they might be zombies.

Let's just say I have a feeling of deja vu, and all the feelings of deja vu I've experienced on the internet had some very unpleasant outcomes.

Let's put it this way.  If 420+ people started talking all at once, what do you think would happen to this board?  Let's put it another way.  If they started posting for the sake of posting (flooding, spamming), how much harm do you think they'd do with that huge number?

So.

lets say they made a program that automatically registers 100 members with 100 email addresses [its easy...]

This way, one can have 100 users. And with a program its possible to make all 100 fake-members to post at one time... easy crap :]

It can be done since UBB is not protected w anti-auto-register stuff [that's if you have to enter a code when registering, and code can be read from a picture, so that auto-register is harder]

UBB can easily enable an option that requires verification via email.  That will immediately void all attempts to register by using a "code" which is expressed as a graphic on the registration page.

Also, judging by the ratio of new members registered (or rather, members suspected of you-know-what) compared to the number of guests, I don't think this is an automatic process.  The ratio is far too low to allow the possibility of automation.  This has to be done manually by the instigator.

If I'd have waited for your warning Kyuna this board would be toast by now. I dealt with the problem you're talking about yesterday.

Hey, I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all in this post.  I'm just asking a question.

What was the problem and how did you deal with it?  Just want to clear up any misconceptions I might've had.

Since only two of the seven or so new registrants this week with access to the board have LLJK in their handle I consider you to be a know-it-all who doesn't, hence the brevity of my post.

My solution was to simply lock down user registrations.

The reason I asked is because there was a user, registered at 629, with the name, LLJK-OAM.  I looked back after class, and this time, it was 636.  I might've been mistaken, but I'm not so sure now.

Correction.  Now, it's not 636 anymore.  It's 640.  What is going on?
