I did a search for a similar thread, and the search came up with 38 pages of threads.  I didn't feel like looking through all those.

Anyway, if by the slim chance this is the first time a thread like this has been made, then I rock.  if not, I'm an idiot and you have full permission to pelt me with rocks.

If this is successful, this might be the first in a long line of top 5 threads.  I personally love top 5 threads.  So lets hear it, top five games of all time.  Only rule is that it has to be a video game of some sort, PC and Mac games do count, dungeons and dragons does not (unless it was a d+d video game).

Drumroll please

5.  Super Metroid:  One of the few games I can play through infinite times without growing tired of it.  Ever.  It took everything that made side scrolling adventures cool and put it into one kick @ss package.  Side scrolling perfection, kind of like...

4.  Castlevania:  SOTN:  I admit that I did not like this game when I first played it.  It was not a conventional Castlevania game, and I was a little turned off by it.  Thank the maker I found it about a year later on clearance at walmart and decided to give it another shot.  Yet another game I could play through over and over and never tire of it.

3.  Doom.  The game that got me into computer games.  I was lucky enough sometime in 94 to have received a 386 computer as a gift from one of my mother's friends.  Our family wasn't poor, but we definitely could not afford to put a computer in the home.  Anyways the shareware version of Doom just so happened to be loaded on the hard drive.  i've been an addict ever since.

2.  Final Fantasy VI:  I think this is the first game I played in which I actually cared about what happened with the characters.  I do believe it was the first storyline that drew me completely in, and did not let go until it was said and done.  A perfect example of how a game can draw you in like a movie or a book, something which is still a little taboo as far as the general population is concerned.

Only one left.  It's a pretty cliche number 1.  It is however, MY number 1.

Chrono Trigger:  A game of this magnitude might not ever be made again.  It is about as close to perfect as anyone can hope to acheive.  Engaging story, nice combat system, developed characters, decent graphics, and memorable music made what will probably stand as the greatest RPG ever made for years to come.  Toryiama even did the graphics for the characters.  I was so dedicated to this game that I completed it fully within 2 days over Christmas break last year.

Looking at this top 5, you may realize that there are no next gen games listed here.  Well, honestly there has been nothing on any next gen system that has moved me quite as much as these games have.  Games that focus on pure fun factor are few and far between these days.  I think Nintendo probably does the best of the big 3 as far as making games that are just plain fun.  Unfortunately the PC market has followed this trend, mainly concentrating on games that are "pretty" but with no substance.

Oh how i miss the old days.  Anyhow, on with your top fives!

My response kind of agrees with rizimar's.  My top 5 list will change about every 3 months.  I believe the number one of all time is doom though, because I started when I was 6, and i still play it to this day.  That's pretty tremendous now that I think about it....

You've gotta dig deeper.  Sure your current faves will always change, but i'm talking games that were monumental in your gaming career.  Games that you can attribute to a time in your life, something memorable.  Not something you just thought was fun.  I can remember the instances surrounding the five games I have listed above, when I played them, where, how, who with, etc.  I remember being up at 4am when I beat Lavos in CT.

You know, things like that.

I'll try harder to answer only because that chicken guy from aqua teens really cracked me up =)

OK Number one, Doom.  I have been through this game so much and I really still can't stop!  The games timeless, there are STILL people who make levels for this game.

Number 2- Sonic.  I grew up on this game, as I have with doom.  The levels, the soundtrack, the speed, everything about this game fascinated me.  And I still do love this game :P

Number 3- Mario.  I know Mario and Sonic sound so basic but age 2-7 I played so much mario.  I still have never beat mario 3, because it was soooo long and everytime i'd get to around the last levels i'd have to do something.  I should do the E word so I can use that save feature i've been hearing about.

Number 4-  Ecco the dolphin.  Not much to say here, just a really great game!

And number 5...... Its SO hard for me to rank 5 games that are listed as my top favorites.  But overall enjoyment i'd say perfect dark.  I have never really had friends who liked video games, but a couple somehow picked up on this game and worked at it really hard, and got pretty good.  Not as good as me though =)  We'd spend weekands fighting and battling on this game, it was a blast!

Hmmm not a great list, i've played so many games to the point where none have a very strong lasting effect on me, every game i've finished has impacted me quite a bit.  Its hard to rank   :?

Easy:

DOOM - MAde me the odd twisted shell I am  :x

Mario - WHo hates Mario? Even people that never played it still like him.

Quake - One word. Ogre! Any game with a nine foot chainsaw weilding monster has my vote.

Sonic - I like it. Not much to say.

Total carnage - Better then Smash TV and ate a shit load of my quarters.

I've never liked calling anything "the greatest", however, two games get that title as far as I'm concerned: Zelda and Doom.  Now, the former is simply the greatest adventure game series to date, each immensly innovative.  Doom's gameplay is simply timeless.  The last three here, to me, are Mega man (series), Castlevania (series), and Mario (series). All of the last mentioned games are truly innovative with timeless styles of gameplay, they've lasted so long for a reason.

However, there are many other greats as far as I'm concerned:

Crono Trigger

Deus Ex

Beyond Good and Evil

Quake

Final Fantasy VII (I don't agree that 6 was as good as people like to say, to me its more fanboy-ism than real quality)

Fable (No, I won't argue this with "well it didn't implement everything it could have, screw that.  The fact is, the game does many innovative things and does them well).

Castlevania: SOTN

Street Fighter (series)

etc etc

In no order...
The Civilization series (excluding Call to Power) - Possibly the greatest strategy games ever.

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - The standards for 2D one-on-one fighting are set in 1991.

Doom - Wolfenstein 3D was cool, Doom was a revolution.

Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Like with Super Mario 64, Miyamoto-san expands his vision for this action-adventure franchise into the third dimension with incredible results. The man works on a level which few can comprehend and he has yet to dissapoint me.

Total Annihilation - Command & Conquer was nice, Warcraft II was cool... but this was just freaking overkill awesome. 8)

M.U.L.E. - The most brilliantly designed multiplayer game ever by Dan/Dani Bunten.

Choices were picked partially on personal preference and relative importance to gaming in general.
And I know I put down eight instead of five. Deal with it.
