I think it's better to collect all questions and answers regarding the pre-alpha version of Daikatana into this thread.

Let's start... :)

It's good hey Meisterm  :D

I've been playing it ever since John sent it over so I can begin testing it - going over stuff and walking around, blowing things up. Really quite interesting, and a few hidden secrets in it that John didn't even know about  . I'll let you guys who haven't played it find out that stuff yourselves though..

Interesting to see it in Q1 mode, obviously only after 2 months of work to see what it could have been like under the Q1 engine. The C4 is fun to use, mine the cells up and watch the prisoners do a really odd death throw.

A big lol to the artwork, as John said himself in the documentation - it was the majority pure shit.

So yeah, cool stuff here that FINALLY got released. Thanks John!

Do you think mrdiffrence's 2 years of nagging actually made a erm... difference, or was the release of dk_prealpha_3-21-1997.zip inevitable? Who knows. Respect to mrdiffrence for persistence though.

Thinking back to early 1997, I probably would have been pretty impressed by this pre-alpha. People who play this pre-alpha might be tempted to knock it as a pile of sh*t, BUT what else was out there at the time? Hmmmm? Shrak for Quake, the first commercial mod for Quake1 had been released. If you play that you will notice how dated and unimaginative it is. The first good Quake add-ons came the next year in the form of Scourge of Armagon & Dissolution of Eternity.

It's all a matter of timing and if Daikatana had been release in early to mid 1998, everything would have been just dandy. Daikatana will always be synonymous with game development disaster, but anybody who knows diddly squat about it, knows John R was done in by his "team". John, you are too nice... there, I've said it :)

I think that Mr.Difference efforts severaly increased the chances of getting those versions released, and I might say a great thanks to him, but as well to the rest of the community.

I just finished downloading after many tries (Server crashing mainly..or only slow download speed). Unfortunatly I can't seem to run it. After I run glKatana.exe, the "Starting Daikatana" windows shows up, and then an error message appears. It says that the memory can't be read on address "0x00000000". I guess this is a problem with my RAM. This pre-alpha is actualy working, so don't hesitate to download it. I'll try to find out a way to fix this problem. In case I can't get it to work, I'll download it at my school..That's realy pedagogical..Thanks again John  :D

I'd have to say that if I'm pestered enough, then I do stuff.  So you can all thank Mr. Difference for all his hard work!

Works for Melvins, too. :)

I'll be putting up a Christmas Melvin on Christmas day for y'all!

The pre-alpha demo runs sweetly on my pc, but have some trouble with changing resolution on my notetop.

John - was gl supported in the in first version of Daikatana from the beginning or have you included that with this release ?

If i remember correctly, the first E3 Demo did only run in software mode, didn't it? So this pre-alpha should have run in software only also..

But i don't really know =)

OMG    The Skins really suck ballz! They look like some absolutely average Q1 Skins from those time.

N1 you got Kenneth Scott later. Dude, his Artwork still roxx! =)

[little OT]
Btw: why have some of the models in Daikatana such a GREAT quality (like the commando or the valkyrie), while other like the giant-spiders in E2 just suck?  [/end OT]

But is seems, the aim of the game could be seen very early. There is already the priest from E3.

Wow, its really cool that this was posted. Is anyone else having problems downloading the Alpha and other files on the Daikatana page? I keep getting a Streamload error saying: File(s) cannot be accessed. You cannot currently access these files. Contact the owner of these files for more information.

Thanks.
