Sony faces $90.7m patent damages

The case concerns Playstation controllers
Sony has been told to pay $90.7m (£48m) in damages and stop selling PlayStation consoles in the United States after losing a patent infringement lawsuit.
Sony said it would appeal the decision, stemming from a 2002 case brought by US firm Immersion, and would continue to sell its products pending the hearing.

A California court found that Sony had infringed sensory technology developed by the small tech business.

This allows a controller to vibrate in time with the game's actions.

Appeal

A federal district court in Oakland upheld a decision by a US court last year which ordered Sony Computer Entertainment, Sony's gaming unit, to pay $82m in damages.

However, the order to suspend sales of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles - the best selling games platforms in the world- and more than 40 individual games does not hold while an appeal is being heard.

Immersion Corporation claimed that Sony's Dual Shock controller for its two PlayStation consoles violated its patent rights, a claim which Sony has denied.

The $90m award is more than three times Immersion's total revenues last year, which amounted to $23.8m.

The California based company develops and licenses digital technology.

Computer games are vital to Sony as profits from its consumer electronics business continue to slide.

The Japanese company's shares closed down 0.91% at 4,360 yen on Monday.

Couldn't Sony just stop using the vibration technology?

They could.

Of course, if they were as smart as Nintendo, who licensed the technology for close to nothing in comparison, or Microsoft, who bargained to pay them less than 1/3 of what Sony has been ordered to pay rather than go to court, they wouldn't be in such a shithole.

Too bad they didn't think of that.

Maybe that's why I'm modding this forum...

I heard about this.. like the article I read suggested, it'll probably end up in royalties and the PSX/PS2 will still be made.

EDIT: Also, it's lame to put patents on simple ideas like this in the first place.  You can't own damned everything!

this patent shit along with the software pirating issue is getting waaay out of hand. lol   OH i was the first to make 4 legged chairs now everyone who makes chares have to pay me to have 4 leggs on their chairs or beds or couches. morons. I was the first who made a button , so every electronic company who makes buttons have to pay me . i got a pattent .

why not pantent patents? lol

A California court found that Sony had infringed sensory technology developed by the small tech business.

WHat are these people on? sony one of the worlds biggest electronic company could not make a controllder vibrate? lol are they gonna sue DILDO companies too? There are some really stupid laws and evil people out there .  where is my shotgun? :p

btw anyone saying my name has to pay 45,99$ every time hehe oh maybe not because dukenukem is already patented.

i heard one cannot even produce free programs if they are patented , i wonder what programmers do for a living? I think its all about excuding new people to be able to grow and thats very bad.. the greedy will be so greedy that it will ruin the practice of a kind totally so no one can ever grow and evolve due to their greed and fear of competition.  .. i tought america liked competition.

its not like virbating stuff is a revolutionary idea? i am disturbed by this law suit.
