Yes, id is a word and that word is the name of the company.
The strangest part of the name is that a lot of people capitalize it as "iD" and while "Id" and "id" have been used in games, there has never been an official thing calling the company "iD".

"[..]Note the lower-case id, which refers to the id as a psychological concept. Originally, both letters were capitals (ID Software), and stood for "In Demand". The "I" was made lowercase in the release of the second Commander Keen series, and eventually the "D" was also dropped down to lowercase which changed the meaning of the company name.[..]" Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_softwareI also used to say I.D. Software till I read that it should be pronounced id.

Also remember that it also came from "Ideas from the Deep", which was abbreviated as ID
I used to say I.D. too.

LOL, I used to say I.D as well. Didn't it also have something to do with In Demand?

I'm always going to say I. *pause* D. Why? because the word "id" sounds stupid quite franky.
Everybody has heard the abbreviation for identification = I.D.
However, how many time have you heard somebody use the word "id" in a conversation. Erm, try never. I would say only 2% of the population even know what it means (In psychoanalytic theory, the division of the psyche that is totally unconscious and serves as the source of instinctual impulses and demands for immediate satisfaction of primitive needs).
I don't care if it's wrong, I will continue with I.D. "id" Software can go f**k themselves. It's like (The artist formerly known as) Prince calling himself something that has no name - erm, way to go dumbass. Now if I changed my name to Gggrrrraaaahhhhlalala-honkhonkfuddleplop, do you think people would bother saying that?
