Hi everybody,

I hope you don't mind me making an announcement here, as it is about a freely available revival of an old 3D classic. :)

If you know and love the classic 6dof 3D shooter Descent, and wonder whether you could still play it on modern hardware, the answer is yes.

You will need to own the full Descent 2 data to run the program, but the executable is free, and the source license is part free (original Descent 2 code), part GPL (OpenGL and D2X-XL enhancements). :)

Take a look at my Descent site to learn more, and meet a lot of other Descent fans on the Descent BB (which is also the place to post bug reports, questions and suggestions around D2X-XL).

Okay, first off, I love this port.  Now, I am also about to come off as an asshole.  I'm fully aware of that.

NOBODY WANTS THIS FUCKING KEYBOARD RAMPING OR FAST PITCH BULLSHIT.

Any crap that interferes with the ship's handling that much should be ripped right out.  I'm STILL trying to find quality keyboard settings to get the ship to control worth a damn, I'm talking fully equal on all three axis (I do not use the mouse).

That said, I dig everything else.  Kudos on giving us an option to disable mipmapping as well, I hate that shit :).

I've used it for 45 minutes.  That was enough.

The X/Y and Z axis aren't balanced movement wise, and I've tried every damn option.  I spent half an hour on that shit.

Okay, the axis problem has "fixed" itself, I flipped some bizarre thing I bet.  Weird.

It pains me that this port is so near flawless, but lacks a decent frontend.  The GUI is cluttered, has way too many options, and at the moment is pissing me off because I cannot seem to disable mipmapping all of a sudden.

I think if you fix the frontend, you'll have a winner.  For now, it's got that whole "customized only for the developers, still a beta" feel that kinda irks me.

New Bug List for ya:

-In 320x200 gameplay, opening up a menu crashes the game to desktop on my ATi Radeon X800XL.  I've had this issue in other versions as well, not just yours.

-Weapons do not switch in Descent 1 v.1.4 with the keys 1-0.

-"Hyperplaning" support needs to be added somehow.

-Upon deletion of D2X.ini, program does not restore to "out of box" defaults and forces mipmapping as well as "new style menus".  Neither of these two options can me changed in game.

-"Use Fluid Physics" option cripples X/Y, Z speed equality using full keyboard controls for movement and firing.

-The X/Y axis moves slightly faster than the Z axis.

-Frontend just plain sucks.  Not a bug, I know, but it's the worst I've seen in a program to date.  Too many "user-fuckupable" options the user does not care about (Camera speed x S/90 degrees?  What the fuck?).

-Frontend is tailored to programmers, not gamers.  Once again, not a bug.  Fix the frontend and this port will OWN!

I ran into this petition just now.. people petitioning for a port of Descent to Linux: http://www.tuxgames.com/petitions/viewpetition.cgi?nc=1141881423&ref=57

Maybe you should send an e-mail to the admins at www.tuxgames.com to tell them about your port?  I really think you should.

#1 You are wrong, or it wouldn't be in D2X-XL.

#2 You can turn it off.

#3 There is neither a need to shout nor to curse. Your language starts to get on my nerves.

The axes movement is unchanged at least from D2X.

I will look into the 320x200 stuff, although I usually play in 1152x864 or higher. :P

How can you tell the effect of fluid physics? Did you play a level containing lava or water areas marked as such? Because that is the only place where some rudimentary, rather fake "fluid physics" are applied. ;)

Basically, Z axis movement is as fast as X/Y - unless there are some D2(X) legacy modifiers I have never bothered to deal with.

If you don't like all the game options, play the game in nostalgia mode.

Josh,

the tuxgames site is a mess, imho. I added a comment to that petition, but even their color scheme makes my eyes hurt, so I didn't bother looking for a contact e-mail very long. :)

CheapAlert,

there's a Descent 2 porting petition on tuxgames, too, and guess what: I found it! ;)

Edit:

Stage-It: In-game menus in 320x200 work for me. Which menu exactly did you try to invoke, and was it with old or new style menus?

Is there something wrong with CheapAlert, or is this the general tone of this forum, or why are you so insanely impolite here? :?

Nothing's wrong with CheapAlert. We just have a few members here who generally lack common courtesy. I apologise on their behalf. Don't take their offending words seriously.

Incorrect.  I take it you're referring to me directly.  No, I have common courtesy and I demonstrate it very often.  Just never, ever to cheapalert because I hate that dipshit.  Oh, and I'm not alone.

Have a nice day. :)
