Cool. That should lower prices on the PS2, leading to lower prices on XBoxes and Gamecubes.

How would that lower the price of the PS2?

What the fuck? I thought they stopped making the PSOne AGES ago! I haven't seen one since the old Dreamcast days!
Over 100 million units. Jesus fucking Christ. Did Genesis or NES even sell that much?
I do know that for every 1,000 PSX's now, there are 9 Saturns. Talk about failure.

Since Genesis and the NES, platform gaming has grown to be more accessible and desired by the general public.

True, but the NES had a massive install base, and the Genesis was made up until 1998, and was a $30 impulse buy at that point.

There are *many* NES clones around in stores (not always game related - a local videoclub sells "hercules" consoles which in practice are NES clones that can play the same NES games as your NES). These are dirt cheap ($20 or so) and many are buying them for their small children (a seven year old will like Super Mario 1 no matter what).

Up here in North America it’s hard to find any imitation games or systems. I don't know about Greece Bad Sector but it’s rare. We do have lots of those 1000 game plug and play consoles that have illegal licensed roms in them. But that about it.

A better question would be why they kept producing PSOnes for so long but essentially stopped selling PS1 games over a year ago. It's been that long since I've seen a new PS1 game that wasn't collecting dust in a clearance bin.
Ah well, it's the official end of an era.

That would have ended long ago with the rise of more advanced consoles, especially the PS2

Contrary to what a lot of people may think here, I have a lot of respect for the PS1.
True, it totally fucked out the SegaCD and Nintendo PlayStation to get in, but once it did, it did almost nothing but good.
It busted the door for developers wide open.
It ushered in the era of easy to program consoles, which later included Dreamcast, XBox, and GameCube.
It had development costs only rivaled by Dreamcast, i.e. zero.
It was cheap. Which meant better sales. Which meant more developers.
It has one of the most diverse and balanced software lineups out of any machine ever. It's on par with Dreamcast. Which is on par with God.
It proved the optical media was a viable mechanism for gaming.
It was a 3D powerhouse that needed nothing but C++ to make it scream, as opposed to multiple assemble languages with Saturn (Although in 1996 the Saturn finally got a decent C++ devkit).
That said, Sony also blocked 2D out of development. Basically, all they allowed were fighters, and RPG's. They didn't feel that 2D "Showed the true power of the machine."
Fuck the fact that there were 11ty billion awesome looking 3D games, 2D "was gay."
They might have killed 2D, but without the PS1 and Dreamcast, game consoles would still be in the fucking stone age.

I can't believe people actually thought that polygon shitfest of the 1990s was actually good-looking and cool. Well, except for some things (like Descent and Quake which both had weird ways of looking good, read: style).
