How true is it? Both use 256 color palettes and generally low resolution graphics. The main difference is that one uses sprites (good for 2D) and the other ploygons (good for 3D.) You can't complain if someone adds ploygon support for a 3D DOOM modification, either.

As for "kiddies" using JDoom, some might, but "kiddies" (assuming curious young people) might like to use anything that catches their eye for whatever reason, be it JDoom, Legacy, ZDoom, EDGE, and so on, but then I've often seen quite a few older people using JDoom, as well. Try calling John Anderson, aka Dr. Sleep, a "kiddie" in any way.

I don't really see whats wrong with either ZDoom( OMG - You actually see your character die! ) or DoomsDay.  They both add to the Doom experiance and give it that little extra...

And they both beat the Win95 launcher hands down any day of the week! :D

doomsday's supprot and speed is crap though, no one but kiddies play it

Hmm, but it is better looking than all other ports. Besides that, it runs on a decent machine quite well. I like it very much for SP -but you are right- for hardcore competitive DM and Speedruns it is not the first choice.
And I agree, right now 'supprot' is quite suboptimal. But they try to improve and build a complete new home (http://dengine.net/). But this seems to take much too long....
Only future will tell us.

Yes. But that's only for those vintage-fanboys, who cannot get the original DOS-engines working and need an as-close-as-possiple-to-the-original port. Don't expect exciting graphics and FX from Choco-Doom.

Re: Malchik.

I didn't know it was still using the Win95 launcher.  For some reason I can't get the mouse to work when running it on my XP machine!

Same with me...I wanted to rock DooM 2 using the Doom 95 executable and no luck with my mouse either...I use zdoom but its hard to set up servers for the custom wads for some reason.
If you find out how to enable the mouse let me know!

DOOM95's Mouse support under Windows2000 and XP is broken. It simply does not work. No way.
You have to use another Doom port (Doomsday, GZDOOM, ZDOOM, even old WINDOOM will work fine...).

Patch. You know. One of those things that fixes, well, mouse support in Doom95 for example. Works fine for me.

I think the problem is, that DooM95 uses 'DMOUSE.VXD' and this vxd-thingie is not supportet under XP or Win2000

Are you sure, you use Win2000 or WinXP and DOOM95's mouse works??
I would be very glad, to hear that and to find a way to get it working.
So, please, can you tell me a few detail, how you've got it working?

-Which Patch? There is at least no official patch?!?!
-Which Kind of Mouse are you using? PS2? Serial? USB? Microsoft? Logitech?...

I just wrote some words (http://doomgate.de/doom95/index.html) for this german site about
Doom95 and would like to add your information 8credits will be given...).

Thanks in advance for more details!

Correct. According to some it should be possible to make a DLL file instead and hack the engine to use it instead of the VXD, but I don't know the details. The only patch I know about for Doom95 isn't official and fixes demo recording from the launcher.

Check this newsgroup posting for info on using Doom95 without the launcher, or with additional commands.
