Myself and petroid have been working on a Daikatana "modification" quietly for a little while now - and today we've got it to a state where we're happy to release it. Instead of me explaining it again, I'll paste a quote right out of our readme:

Quote
Firstly, this modification was intended solely for our own personal use, since we own the game. Only when we shared the idea with a few people in the community (with positive feedback) did we consider releasing it to the public.

The idea came about one night of Daikatana Deathmatching, when the question was asked. "I wish you could install multiplayer only". And here it is: DKDM. This modification incorporates only the multiplayer aspect of Daikatana (32 maps of carnage featuring deathmatch, CTF and deathtag - with support for community multiplayer maps), and has been heavily butchered to remove ANYTHING which isn't used in multiplayer to make it as small as possible. As a result, the game now takes up a very reasonable 255 MB of HDD space when fully installed (114 MB compressed).

Also, DKDM has an additional PAK (pak5.pak) which contains a "mplayer demo" modification. When activated, Daikatana is turned back in time to how the game looked like circa March 1999, when the initial mplayer only demo was released. The "mplayer demo" PAK contains skins, textures, interfaces, sounds, effects and loadscreens from the mplayer demo, and recreates as accurately as possible (except game physics) the mplayer demo audio and visual experience.

Full readme: http://www.daikatananews.net/dkdm_readme.html

Mirrors:
Daikatana Files: http://dk.toastednet.org/DaikatanaDM_v1.2.1.exe

A special thanks goes to DI-MeisterM, zeus, and John for testing, files, mirroring, etc.

You can forward any feedback, suggestions, bug reports, etc to either myself or petroid any time.

We hope you guys enjoy the modification.

Curious, and I know John is involved, but is this officially authorized?

Sorry, misread your post. This is not an "official" release, no.

John put it now on his frontpage, so it's official now. Have now no problems in continuing hosting it :)

Yeah, thanks! Great work. I had just reinstalled DK to do another playthrough, and the timing is perfect because now there are players for DKDM too. It's been great getting back into it, so great.

Very cool. I didn`t think we`d hear any more DAIKATANA software news unless John decided to do a sequel.

I salute independent endeavours!

WoW, I have seen more players on my server the last few days than I have ever seen.
Kudos to The EO and Petroid great work. Hope to see more of you guys playing, I have recorded a few demo's already too.
The demo I did yestereday had 10 players I think.
