I'm a hard-core gamer from Romero's era, and even before. After playing years of pong, tetris, Intellivision D&D, and Mario, I remember my dad coming home one day and opening the door...I said, "Dad, what's up?" He said, "Boot the computer up, son. I'll be in in a minute." I said, "Why?" He said, "Because I bought a new game, and it's called DOOM. And you're going to LOVE it."

Ever since that day, I've been immersed in games. Although life has passed between me and my father, I'll never forget how totally hyped I was about Daikatana...and how disappointed I was...it's amazing how much just a simple game will affect you...when Diakatana came out. I was disillusioned...could the DOOM creator actually produce something like THIS?

It's been many years since then. I was going over my old games, and although at the time I played it, I was immersed in the FPS hype/trends, now I really see what Romero was trying to do. I have had years of experience with RPG's since then - everything from FF series to Fallout to Morrowind, and I now see...Romero was reaching too far into the future to create a hybrid FPS/RPG. If this game was release today as budget software, he would receive raving reviews....I'm serious. Romero is truly a flucking genius...and it takes everyone years to realize that. If you don't understand what I'm talking about, that's ok...you'll see in a few years.

Yes, it is a good game with great ideas and game play.

I have enjoyed Daikatana since 2000 ;) and still do.

Daikatana is actually a really cool game. Every game, however, does have it's flaws. Daikatana is no exception, but it did serve it's purpose. Everything that's created - be it video games, music, artwork, or whatever - has a purpose. Romero wanted Daikatana to bring in a new genre, just like he and id Software did back in 1991. In a way, he kind of did.

Hi Mammut!

Unfortunately I haven't had a PC at home since my computer room became a child's bedroom, otherwise I'd be making people 'take the hardwood' right now!! :)

Glad to see you are still running EU servers though!  I might try and get on from a friends house.

A little bit off topic, but you can see many features of Daikatana in the new released Clive Barker's Jericho game.

I somehow believed it was important to say this, so I will.

I play Daikatana today sometimes, and often think, "This game had so many good ideas... but they were executed in poor ways."  That has just always been my take on it.  I see John Romero's vision, and what he wanted to do, but somehow, it came out in a strange way.  I feel that maybe with a team that stuck together, more resources, more time spent, more engine tweaks and changes, bug testers and time taken to address issues brought up by the testers, it would have been a lot better and more well-received.

I have respect for John Romero, but I just see so many things wrong and good with Daikatana at the same time.  The ladder mechanics, bosses, sometimes the way the weapons work... those are things I look at and think "with a little tweaking, this would have been perfect, but it's not.  It's far from it as it is right now."

That's my honest opinion on Daikatana.

Also to be honest though, I hope that John Romero looks at his games and thinks the same thing.  Because I think we should always look at our projects, no matter how perfect we consider them, and think "how could this be done even better?"  It's how the game industry progresses and learns.

I have same opinion, anyway mostly what made people not play the game or not like it was the amount of bugs at the release version (some of the bugs were not fixed even with patch, like the famous wyndrax tower part2 save bug or some bugs with stuck maps at coop, (final map if I remember well) otherwise I think Daiakatana coop is one of the best balanced coop games ever with its system, but still ability to have only 3 players there is kinda too limited, yeah it is good for storyline and that it assigns you charactervand his name instead of your player name, but still why not make a coopgame like any other multiplayer gametypes in game, 3 players is too small number), or the somewhat hard to learn system, like many people didn't find out you can upgrade daiaktana with killing enemies only with it (although this does not give you the ability of enhancing your other skills of course but the daikatana is very good weapon when fully upgraded) and actually see at what upgrade phase it is when you hit tab or something, some people would think it is version number or something.

Anyway why someone won't make a sequel or remake? On unreal engine3 it would look good and also if all the ideas that were meant to be in the game were included or even make them better, etc.

Btw can someone kick these idiots in the ass on youtube? Like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOTN4rS_nIU
or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQESFI2ePSs&NR=1

Anyway DK is for me the most underrated FPS of all times.

Thanks, John.  Haha, just kidding.  Actually, there's my little project going on right now.  Daikatana on the source engine. :)

But that's just a port right, not like a complete remake like Black Mesa Source is for example? Well, if someone could make a complete remake with some differences and possibly eliminate many aspects of game which people didn't like or take back some stuff from betas to it, etc. That would be great.
I never played console ports of a game, did it include much differences?

Anyway I think DK is still one of the best FPS I have played, aside the bugs. Well, I think it is a game for people with BRAIN and not for noobs who cannot play game.

I think the multiplayer is far better than Quake2 or something like that, it is really fast paced and is good and I really like the weapons unlike some people. Some people complain about the suicide weps, but they only didn't find how to use it or how to handle the game and its system. And I didn't find sidekicks annoying at all (well only without a patch a little when there was bug with superfly dissapeared during save and I couldn't finish level), until I've heard the complains, I think it is good that you must wait and leaad the sidekicks through the level to reach the exit, just teleporting into next level for them would seem very unrealistic.

It will be remade eventually, it's going to be two seperate versions.  Version 1.0 will just be a straight up "native" (or close as possible) port, i.e. original textures, models, etc.  And version 2.0 will be revamped.  The purpose for this is, it would be nice to see a redone DK but some people would rather it be left alone.  That way you can pick and choose what you want.
