So we have, what? Another three years before we get to play it? :P

10 years is a very long time to make a single game.  As for the trailer, I was seriously not impressed. Infact, it left me totally baffled as to why people go nuts over Duke Nukem...

Not impressed by the trailer.  Looks to me like a Doom 3 mod.  Very similar to Prey, in fact.

Just another shooter, it seems.  Let's hope they can at least do something good with this one.

The only downside I saw was that it didn't look as lifelike as I had hoped.

But come on. It's Duke fuckin' Nukem!

I would have preferred they licensed an engine, like Quake III: Arena, and put the game out several years ago.  Then, license another great engine (Doom 3, Unreal 3, etc) and put another game out this year or last.  For a game that has had so much taunting from the fans and media about its dev cycle, they really shouldn't be playing this "peek-a-boo" BS with their game trailers and demos.  They had better get smart like Epic, and do some developer commentated previews like Gears of War did; that show the game off, and what makes it look so fun to play.  A StarCraft quality FMV of Duke lifting a dumbell in the dark is not going to do it.

"Hail to the King, baby!" -- Yeah, fuck off.  Your time has come and gone, Duke.  There've been less cheesy, bigger and better heroes to follow you.

...and most of them suck big time :-P

Actually the only "game hero" i can think that is a good one is Gordon Freeman. But Half-Life has a totally different, more "serious" style and Duke Nukem is all but serious (and i'm not saying this as a bad thing).

I loved the teaser (note this is a teaser and not a trailer - they're cooking a proper trailer which will be released soon) although the graphics weren't the best they could be. Then again gameplay matters and Duke is all about gameplay (Build's tech was dated when it was used for Duke and Blood, yet everybody loves these games for their gameplay, not graphics).

Btw, the game was remade from scratch (except the engine) in 2004, so technically it's in development for only three and a half yar :-P

If we stick to FPS games, you're right.  Freeman is about the most prevailing, however I also thought they did a great job with the Riddick character in his game.  I just saw John's updated home page that mentioned an actual trailer release, so I hope it looks good.  Honestly, the cartoon graphics, innovative weapons, level designs, and animations are what made me a fan of D3D.  I hope this game lives up to the original.

Also, I personally count the dev cycle from the time the game is announced and work begins, to the time it goes gold.  I don't care how many engines, teams, etc they go through from start to finish.  Whenever John describes the dev cylce of Daikatana, he includes the time when it was being built around the Quake engine as well as the Quake II engine, and he even had nearly his whole team scrapped and rebuilt during the dev cycle.

Oh, BTW, huge congrats on your job on the Thesius team, and your TV spot.  I never said anything before about it.

Freeman is fucking terrible.  He is not even a character, he is just a digital transplant of the player.  They basically tried to create an easily transplantable character like Link except with no personality (Instead of a little bit).

Freeman is fucking badass, yes, but he is not a character in my eyes.  His background goes no deeper than he graduated MIT, and that does not affect anything in game.

I always laugh when people think that Duke Nukem is supposed to be a "serious" game hero.   He is a spoof of arrogant macho-ness.   His games were never serious.  It's all crazy and funny......  on purpose.  Frat boy humor.

I dunno about you guys, but I grew up with Duke Nukem. It's like seeing your hero emerge out of nowhere...which it was kinda like. I am so willing to give up my life for DNF.

I have to admit after bearing witness to 98's less then stellar trailer and then 2001's better but still behind trailer I was not looking foreword to seeing this but they do look as if they are really working hard at this and all the Aliens seen in this trailer actually look very similar to their sprite counterparts. The problem with 3DRealms is the team is just too elite and small to possibly keep up and maintain this game with current technology and standards.

I was always with the Duke from the very beginning and will still patiently wait until the day it is finally released but I feel depressed to think back on the two most major scrapped builds the team had already gone through and looking t this I can see them doing this again as technology shifts once more. I've been with this asshole since the day he was pissed off for having Oprah interrupted to the day the title has been bastardized by many third party console makes (Zero hour, Time to Kill, Land of the Babes etc.)

Well actually the 1998 trailer was quite impressive for the time and the engine (some kind of rigid body physics, big areas, lots of particle effects, large objects in which you could enter, etc).

The 2001 trailer was good too, especially from an interactivity (and content) point of view, but lacked behind in some areas (lipsync and animation actually).

The '98 one, for being Quake 2, was actually really good, if they took the time to work on it like Ion did for anachronox, it would've been really good.

The '01 trailer still gives me goosebumps.
