So I wanna start at least making single-player maps for FPS games.    I thought it might be fun to make some old-school Doom levels.   Are there any map editors for Doom that a noob like me can use?   Something that you can see the textures in the map while editing?  Something that you can tap a key and walk around in real quick to see how it plays as you build it?      Is there a windows based Doom level editor?   With tutorials?

AFAIK, no but for DN3D you should try EDuke32 and Mapster32. These are windows ports and extremely improved versions of the Build engine, supporting true 3D, models, high-res textures and other stuff. Also there is a new renderer in works that adds per-pixel rendering support, dynamic lighting and shadows and other stuff. Check the 3D Realms forums.
