9/9/1999 was both the day Sega Dreamcast was launched and Squaresoft released Final Fantasy VIII. I remember rushing over to Best Buy during lunch to get my copy of FF VIII which I couldn't wait to get home and play. It's funny that I had no interest at all in the Dreamcast at the time, but ended up getting one about a year before it died. It was a great platform that was plagued by a few mistakes, some of which pretty much all the big console developers can be accused of. The biggest error is to not have a compelling game bundled with the system. I won't re-tell the whole story here because there's plenty of information about it's demise all over the Internet. Personally, I love the Dreamcast, and I still own two of them. I even had a Seganet account. I still remember looking up full motor builds for my car at the time on Comptech's website using the Dreamcast browser. It's browser was actually quite good, and I found it to be superior to WebTV by a long shot. You could even get a keyboard and mouse. Nothing beat having the proper controls for a console game of Quake III: Arena! With how closely related to PC hardware these new consoles are getting, I'm surprised you can't use the USB ports with a standard keyboard and mouse for FPS's. Here are some of my favorite games:

- Phantasy Star Online
- Ferrari F355 Challenge
- Soul Calibur
- Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
- Skies of Arcadia
- Resident Evil: Code Veronica

There's tons more, but those are some of the best. Awesome system!

I've been building up a collection of Dreamcast games.
-Shenmue
-Sonic Adventure
-Sonic Adventure 2
-Zombie Revenge
-Dynamite Cop
-Spawn
-Jet Grind Radio
-Starlancer
-Expendable
-Sword of the Berzerk
-Carrier
-Blue Stinger
-Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm
-Maken X

The Dreamcast I have I bought used and it's kinda scuffed and worn looking.   I kinda want to get a new one still sealed in the box.     The same for my PS1.   The video cable plug is kinda broken and it's all scuffed and the lenss motor is starting to lag.   I want to get a new sealed-in-the-box PS1 too.

Sure,.. you can buy a used DC or PS1 for about $15,.. but I've learned that everything has a limited life of use.  Plus no telling what has happened to the used consoles.   I prefer a brand-new in the box version.   PLus I think it's kinda cool to buy a 90's console that's still sealed and unused.  It's like you're opening a time capsule.   (if you can't tell,.. I'm a really nostalgic person.)

also,.. I need to get a tube tv for the old systems.   Old consoles look like crap on HDTV.   Besides,.. what's more authentic 90's gaming than using a tube tv for the 90's consoles?

Dreamcast was the best system ever. Seriously how many things at the time could give a twelve year old the gift of Sonic and masturbation, not at the same time of course.

Just kidding I had a PC for that :).

On a more serious note, DC's library contains some of the most awesome, innovative games ever and the hardware itself was revolutionary. The controller is STILL my favorite analog pad, it's ergonomic perfection, too bad the D-Pad sucks though.

And everyone knows when you are playing Dreamcast because it's shrieky servo motor for it's disc drive can be heard from a mile away.

If you don't have one, buy one, a 100-pack of CD-R's, and $5 to access SegaHub and just start burning games to your hearts desire.

Look in to buying mint condition used, it's far cheaper if you can locate it.  Got a Saturn a few years ago for $80 with everything, including warranty cards, literally looked brand new.  The controller had a tiny scratch, that's it.
