y know? i keep seeing people saying QUAKEII/QUAKEIII/QUAKE4/ETQW are sequals in name only... but are they REALLY? whos to say they dont take place in the same universe? heres my examination:

ETQW:strogg invade earth, all our armies are like "oh shittiness! team up!" and we make them leave. some missions humans did involved stealing
strogg slipgate, examining there tech etc.

QUAKE: our new slipgate is 60% working blah blah. a primitive version the strogg (POSSIBLY) called quake come through and adapt to our world (hence the grunts and enforcers) we send a team of warriors to fight them, but only one makes it through.(notice the strogg logo on the boxes near slipgates Q1)

QUAKEII: we attack stogg to make them die so they dont attack us again (HOO_RA_LOL)

QUAKEIII: past protagonists are stuck in an arena kill there arena buddies. this fits with the rest if say the vadrigar made the quake for no reason(have you seen the Q3 maps? look at Q1 maps...)

QUAKE4:with the makron, the strogg leader dead,we go to the strogg homeworld again to finish them off.

The great thing about the Quake 1 "story" is that it is so bare that it is very open to interpretation.  With the large mixture of themes and enemies,..

..... if someone wanted to make a Quake 1 "fan-comic" or fan-fiction (but I think a fan-comic would be more interesting as the visuals of the monsters and settings are a large part of why Quake 1 is interesting) they would have lots of room to breath as far as the story.  Just stay true to the settings and monsters and fit in the "how" and "why" .
