They must tried very hard to make it so ugly :-)

The big box seems to have a lot of stuff "stuffed" in it, so they added some duct tape at the left and at the side edge of the box in order to make sure that it won't blow :-)

...and they must ran out of space on the big box, so they placed some stuff in little boxes around it :-)

(first impressions :-))

Okay, i'm not sure if this is a real PS3 devkit, the URL says so however :-). But at the other side, PS1 and PS2 devkits had a normal look, so i don't see why PS3 devkit to resemble the look of an UFO from a sci-fi movie of the '60s :-P.

It was fun, nonetheless :-)

Ahh, but don't you see, it's the powerfull cell processor that's inside that counts! Besides, we all know the pictures of the "real" ps3 were faked. Gamers are going to love having this tiny (sic) machine sitting in their rooms! Who needs a coffee table anymore!

IT'S PRETTY!

But honestly, that PS3 dev kit looks like it was made at the Homebrew Computer Club.  It's a piece of shit.  Even an Altair 8800 looks better than that.

Well, it's not High School level yet, but close enough.

A development kit is nothing more than unlocked console hardware.  It's basically a PS3 that you can test games on.

Now, that's the Hardware itself.  That's not the important part, the important part is the Compiler, Documentation, and other tools that come with the development kit.  You can write all the code you want, but without a compiler to make your code into an actual executable, you won't be running anything.  So the dev kits also include the compilation tools necessary to compile for the Hardware.  The documentation is extremely important as it provides you with the system calls and libraries that the system has available, without which you can't quite make a game.

Once you compile, of course, you can run your programs on the Hardware that came with the dev kit.   Since this is a PS3, those programs will generally be games.

Once you are done with the game development, you can make a print of the game that will run on a retail system, in this case the PS3 you'd have at home.
